Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness Month - October, 2010

October is breast cancer awareness month and to commemorate this day Maina foundation organized a walk under the leadership of Ms. Supriya Ramamurthy of New York at Riverside park in Manhattan on Sunday October 10, 2010. Several of the board members were involved in the planning and set-up of the event which was a huge success. Dr. Allyson Shrikhande gave a welcoming speech followed by a moving speech on breast cancer and the importance of early detection by the keynote speaker Dr Deborah Axelrod, a prominent breast cancer surgeon from NYU medical center. Dr. Anitha Srinivasan was the second invited speaker who emphasized that early detection was a major factor in the treatment of this disease. The speeches were followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Mr. Shankar Pandit in the loving memory of his wife Mrs. Shailaja Pandit. At the end of the walk along a very picturesque path, everyone congregated for some delicious snacks donated by Mr. Virender Kumar of Queens, NY. Pictures of this event were taken by Ms. Sonika Gupta and are posted on the website. This special event was well attended by several well wishers and friends who are passionate about promoting the cause of breast cancer in developing countries.

An evening of music and dances

A cultural event was organized on November 14, 2009 at the Middletown temple, CT followed by dinner. This fund raiser was very successful and well attended by friends and family.

A walk to save lives

The first public fund raiser of Maina Foundation was held on June 7, 2008 on a bright sunny Sunday, at the Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme CT. The event was attended by over 75 participants who drove several hours from far away cities in CT, MA, NJ and NY to show their support for this charitable cause.

Mr. Dinesh Chedda, an executive from Fidelity Group came from Bedford MA to participate in this 3-mile walk; he brought along his brother Navin Chheda. Gupta family along with a few high school students from The Masters School and some other family friends came from West Harrison NY and Closter NJ. Supriya and Shankar Ramamurthy along with kids, residents of Manhattan beat the summer weekend traffic and drove to give their whole hearted support to this event.

Several high school students and a couple of cub scouts were volunteers distributing water and soda along the walk. Local residents, including Dave and Michelle Spinelli helped organize the walk and manned the registration booth. This fun filled event was followed by a delicious buffet lunch -- several family friends and well-wishers, including Kira Van Deusen from East Lyme contributed home-cooked food.

Started in the memory of Mrs. Shailaja Pandit, the Maina Foundation is dedicated to providing critical funding for the early detection and treatment of breast cancer in under-privileged women of India. Mr. Shankar Pandit, husband of Shailaja Pandit, performed the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Funds raised by this annual walk will be used to help purchase and install the first mammography unit in the Lions Service Center in New Mumbai. The event raised approximately $14,000 towards this goal on that day and also drew in additional approximately $5,000 from participants who could not make it to the event.

This event has made it possible to forge ahead with the goal of installing the first mammogragh unit. Please stay tuned for many more fun events being planned in the near future.
